The Phone-Free School Day has begun!

Hooper Elementary will implement the Phone-Free School Day policy starting Tuesday, February 18, 2025, to support student mental health and increase student engagement. The following are important reminders:

  • The use of cellphones and other electronic devices during the school day are not allowed.
  • This policy also applies to devices that provide similar functionality to a smartphone, such as a smart watch, earbuds, and smart glasses.
  • Students will turn off all cellphones and store them in their Portable Storage Container for the entire school day.
  • School day refers to the time between when the morning bell rings for instruction until the bell rings for dismissal when the school day ends, including recess, nutrition, and lunch.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT

We understand that out students will need support as we transition into the revised policy. Supports will be provided as follows:

  • Verbal reminders
  • Referral to a counselor/designee for a conversation
  • Phone call to parent/guardian to review the cell phone policy with their student
  • In-person meeting with the parent/guardian
  • A phone may be taken if the student does not follow progressive guidance

PROCEDURES

  • Students will turn off their cellphones when the school day begins upon entering the school
  • Students will turn off their cellphone and place them in the classroom portable storage container as they enter the classroom.
  • Students will retrieve their cellphones from the classroom portable storage container when permission is granted in an orderly manner once the school day ends.
